What is the L-1 Visa?

The L-1 visa is a nonimmigrant work visa for foreign nationals transferring within the same company to a U.S. location.

L-1A 

For executives and managers (valid for up to 7 years)

L-1B

For employees with specialized knowledge (valid for up to 5 years)

L-1 Visa Application Process

Here’s how the L-1 visa process generally works:

Determine Eligibility

Ensure you’ve worked for the company abroad for at least 1 continuous year in the last 3 years.

Form I-129 Filed

Your company submits a petition to USCIS on your behalf (or files a blanket petition if eligible).

Receive Approval Notice

If USCIS approves, you'll get Form I-797.

Abroad Visa Application

Submit DS-160, pay fees, and attend your visa interview at a U.S. embassy.

Enter & Work (U.S.)

Once your visa is issued, you may enter the U.S. and start working under L-1 status.

Who is Eligible for the L-1 Visa?

To qualify, you must:

Have worked abroad for a qualifying organization for at least 1 year within the last 3 years

Be transferring to a U.S. office in an executive, managerial, or specialized knowledge role

Be joining a company with a qualifying corporate relationship (e.g., parent, branch, affiliate, subsidiary)
